Today marks the opening day of Gulfstream Park’s 2016 Championship Meet, which gets off the ground running with the 18th renewal of the $1.1 million Claiming Crown, a nine-race collaboration for horses that have started for a claiming tag at least once in their career.

The highlight of the Claiming Crown program is the $200,000 Claiming Crown Jewel, a nine-furlong contest on the main track for three-year-olds an upward which have started for a claiming price of $35,000 or less since January 1, 2015.

Royal Posse, a winner of his past three stakes starts against New York–breds by a combined total of 10 lengths, is the 7-5 morning line favorite in the Claiming Crown Jewel, which drew field of nine colts and geldings.

Ken and Sarah Ramsey sit atop the Claiming Crown’s all-time leading owner list with 12 wins. Their primary trainer, Mike Maker, is the leading conditioner in Claiming Crown history with 12 victories, and jockey Jose Flores is the leading rider with five Crown wins to his credit.

The first of nine Claiming Crown races is carded as the third race on the Saturday program at Gulfstream Park; post time is 1:00 P.M. Eastern.
