Churchill Downs Full-Card Analysis: April 29, 2017
The Churchill Downs 2017 Spring Meeting will commence with aplomb on Saturday night, as the venerable Louisville, Kentucky racetrack plays host to an 11-race twilight program highlighted by a pair of stakes races–the $65,000 Roxelana Stakes for older fillies and mares and the $100,000 William Walker Stakes for three-year-olds. Both events will be contested at six-furlong trips on the main track.
Decidedly low-priced favorites will be salty in both the black-type events on the card, as the fleet of foot Finley’sluckycharm–4-5 on the morning line–is the controlling speed in a small field in the Roxelana and is coming off a game second-place effort in the La Brea Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita last December. The equally fast Syndergaard turns back to a sprint in the William Walker Stakes and drops out of grade one company; he will be tough to reel in breaking from the one-hole under regular rider Johnny Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher.
