Churchill Downs Full-Card Analysis: Saturday, May 6, 2017

Though Mother Nature will give it Her best try, inclement weather will not be able to put the kibosh on history, as Kentucky Derby Week forges ahead at Churchill Downs with today’s highly-anticipated running of the 143rd $1,000,000 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) to be contested at the classic distance of a mile and one quarter.

As expected, a full-field of 20 three-year-old colts will go to the post at 6:46 P.M. Eastern this evening in the first leg of the Triple Crown and, at this writing, the early favorite at 4-1 is the Todd Pletcher-trained colt Always Dreaming. The New Jersey-bred Irish War Cry is currently the second choice at 5-1, while McCraken is 7-1 and morning line favorite Classic Empire is a healthy 8-1.

In addition to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), there are six other supporting stakes on the program–the $300,000 Humana Distaff (G1), the $300,000 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes Presented by Longines (G2T), the $250,000 Pat Day Mile Stakes Presented by Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities (G3), the $300,000 American Turf Stakes presented by Ram Trucks (G2T), the $500,000 Churchill Downs Stakes presented by Twinspires.com (G2) and the $500,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1T).

The Green Sheet had three wins on Friday’s grizzly 13-race program at Churchill Downs and five days into the meet, The Sheet is giving out winners at a 26 percent clip with its’ top selection in each race finishing in the money 59 percent of time.

Post time at Churchill Downs for the first of 14 races on the Saturday, May 6th Kentucky Derby 143 program is 10:30 A.M. Eastern.
