Ellis Park, the second oldest racetrack in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, kicks off its 95th season on Saturday, July 1 with a nine-race program highlighted by the featured eighth on the program, a $41,000 entry-level allowance affair going a flat mile on the turf.
Lothenbach Stable’s Giant Payday, a well-bred son of Giant’s Causeway trained by Ian Wilkes, has been installed as the 3-1 morning line favorite in the field of 11. The three-year-old chestnut colt finished last in his last outing over a “yielding” turf course in the Arlington Classic (G3T) on May 27 but has never been worse than second on turf outside of stakes company.
The 2017 meet opens with a four consecutive days of live racing starting Saturday, July 1 and going through the Fourth of July on Tuesday. The summer stand in Henderson runs through Labor Day–Monday, September 4–with racing on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The only exception to Saturday racing is September 2–the opening day of Kentucky Downs. First post is 1:50 P.M. Eastern.
