Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. will kick off its 2018 Spring Meeting and Kentucky Derby week on Friday, April 28 with a 10-race evening program highlighted by the 4th running of the $100,000 William Walker Stakes for three-year-olds sprinting five-furlongs on the Matt Winn Turf Course.
Newtown Anner Stud’s Beckford (GB) is the 3-1 morning line choice in the turf test by virtue of his fifth place finish–beaten just two lengths by the multiple stakes winner and likely Kentucky Derby (G1) starter Mendelssohn–in last fall’s Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) at Del Mar. The three-year-old son of Bated Breath (GB) will make his first start for trainer Brendan Walsh; jockey Julien Leparoux has the call.
Post time for the first of 10 races on Saturday evening at Churchill Downs is 6:00 P.M. (Eastern).
Steam touted three winners on Friday’s 10-race, closing day program at Keeneland and, on the day, had a positive two percent return on investment (ROI*), or a flat-bet profit of four cents for each two dollars wagered on its top selections on the card.
Last spring in Louisville, Steam posted a record of 372-99-71-62 for a win percentage of 27 percent; its top selections finished in the money 62 percent of the time.
