Steam ChurchillA nine-race program is on the docket on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, at Churchill Downs–Military Appreciation Day at the venerable Louisville, Ky. racetrack.

In honor of those who have served our country, all active and retired members of the United States Armed Forces will be admitted free of charge. Additionally,  Churchill’s bugler, Steve Buttleman, will perform patriotic melodies following the “Call to the Post” for each race.

The featured fifth race on the card is a high-end, $100,000 optional claiming/classified allowance heat for three-year-olds and upward going eight and one half-furlongs on the Matt Winn Turf Course.

Team Valor International’s First Premio, second in the $75,000 Opening Verse Stakes in Louisville on May 3 for trainer Mark Casse, is the the 2-1 morning line favorite in a compact, albeit competitive, field of seven.

Furthermore, the program has a $656,990 carryover in the 20-cent Single 6 Jackpot (races 4-9), and a $5,122 carryover in the $1 Super Hi-5.

Steam gave out a pair of winners on Sunday’s nine-race program at Churchill Downs and 18 days into the 2018 Spring Meet in Louisville, is hitting at a 23 percent win clip; its top selections have finished in the money 59 percent of the time.
