Two Stakes Highlight Sunday’s Program At The “Pea Patch”
Ellis Park wraps up another weekend of live Thoroughbred horse racing in the Tri-State Area on Sunday, August 12 with a 10-race program on the agenda at the Henderson, Ky. oval.
The card is highlighted by a pair of black-type events– the $75,000 Ellis Park Derby for three-year-olds going eight-furlongs on the main track, and the $100,000 Groupie Doll Stakes (G3), for fillies and mares three years old and upward slated for eight-panels on dirt.
Michael Pressley and Cindy and Larry Jones’ Kowboy Karma, winner of last summer’s $50,000 Strike Your Colors Stakes at Delaware Park, is the 3-1 morning line favorite for the Ellis Park Derby. Jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr. has the mount for trainer Larry Jones.
Klein Racing’s Pinch Hit, fresh off a win in the $100,000 Mari Hulman George Stakes at Indiana Grand on July 14, is the 2-1 choice on the morning line for the Groupie Doll Stakes (G3). Shaun Bridgmohan will ride the daughter of Harlan’s Holiday for trainer Brad Cox.

Steam touted one winner on Saturday’s nine-race program at Ellis Park and, as a result, 20 days into the 2018 summer stand at the “Pea Patch”, sports a win clip of 27 percent. Furthermore, Steam‘s top selections have finished in the money 61 percent of the time at the meet.
