Claiming Crown Kicks Off Championship Meet
Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. kicks off its 90-day 2018-19 Championship Meet on Saturday, December 1. The 11-race program, which attracted 149 entrants for an average of 13.5 starters per race, is highlighted by the $1.1 million Claiming Crown–a multi-race amalgamation that serves as an annual tribute to the blue-collar horses that are the backbone of the Thoroughbred racing industry.
Joseph E. Besecker’s Aztec Sense, son of Street Sense that has won his past seven starts, will go postward favored in the $200,000 Claiming Crown Jewel, the nine-race series’ centerpiece event. The five-year-old bay gelding will be making his first start since September 22 for trainer Jorge Navarro; jockey Emisael Jaramillo has the call.
Pletcher, Saez Return To Defend Titles
Trainer Todd Pletcher, who has won the past 15 training titles at Gulfstream’s Championship Meet, and jockey Luis Saez, who won a record-setting 137 races at this meet in 2017-18, will be be back to defend their respective titles in 2018-19. The Pletcher Barn has three starters on opening day while Saez, who has won the past two Championship Meet riding titles, has been named on nine mounts on opening day.
Post time for the first of 11 races at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, December 1 is 11:50 A.M. (Eastern). There is a $200,000 guaranteed pool in the late 50-cent Pick 4 (races 8-11) and the late 50-cent Pick 5 (races 7-11), and a $50,000 guaranteed pool in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 Jackpot (races 6-11).
