Three Stakes Headline Friday’s Program
Florida Derby weekend begins in earnest at Gulfstream Park on Friday, March 29 with an 11-race program on tap at the Hallandale Beach, Fla. racetrack.
The card is highlighted by a trio of stakes races–the $100,000 Skip Away Stakes for four-year-olds and upward going a mile and three-sixtenths on the main track, the $100,000 Appleton Stakes (G3T), for four-year-olds and upward slated for a flat mile trip on the grass, and the $100,000 Orchid Stakes (G3T), for fillies and mares four-years-old an upward going 11-furlongs on the turf.
Centennial Farms’ Rocketry, a two-time stakes winner, is the 5-2 morning line favorite in Skip Away Stakes; Javier Castellano will ride for trainer Jimmy Jerkens. In the Grade 3 Appleton, Robert V. LaPenta and AJ Suited Racing Stables’ Hawkish, a winner of three-of-five lifetime starts, is the 2-1 morning line choice; Irad Ortiz, Jr. has the call for trainer Jimmy Toner. Finally, in the Grade 3 Orchid, R Unicorn Stable’s Santa Monica (GB), who is coming off a second-place finish in the La Prevoyante Stakes (G3T) on January 26, is the even-money pick; Irad Ortiz, Jr. will be in the irons for trainer Chad Brown.
