Kentucky Derby week 2020 steams ahead on Thursday, September 3–affectionately known as Thurby–at Churchill Downs with an 11-program on the docket at the venerable Louisville, Ky. racetrack.

The card is highlighted by a pair of stakes races–the $115,000 Opening Verse Stakes for four-year-olds and upward slated for a flat mile trip on the Matt Winn Turf Course, and the $200,000 Pocahontas Stakes (G3), a one-mile test around one-turn on the main track for two-year-old fillies

In the Opening Verse, Juddmonte Farms, Inc.’s Set Piece (GB), who is Group 3 stakes-placed in England, is the 3-1 morning line favorite in a field that attracted 10 horses in the race’s body and two also-eligible entrants. Hall of Famer Javier Castellano will be astride the four-year-old son of Dansili (GB) for trainer Brad Cox.

In the Pocahontas, Phoenix Thoroughbred III Ltd.’s Crazy Beautiful, winner of the Debutante Stakes at Ellis Park in her last start, is the slight 2-1 morning line favorite over the flashy first-out maiden winner Inject in a full field of 12 entrants. Jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr.–who has been cleared to ride by health officials and Churchill Downs after recently testing positive for COVID-19–has the call on the gray daughter of Liam’s Map for trainer Kenny McPeek.
