Three Stakes Highlight Opening Day Card
Keeneland Race Course kicks off its 15-day Spring Meet on Friday, April 2 with a 10-race program on tap at the venerable Lexington, Ky. racetrack.
The card is highlighted by three stakes races–the $100,000 Palisades Turf Sprint Stakes for three-year-olds going 5.5-furlongs on the turf, the $150,000 Beaumont Stakes Presented By Keeneland Select (G3) for three-year-old fillies slated for a seven-furlong, 184-foot trip on the main track, and the $150,000 Kentucky Utilities Transylvania Stakes (G3T), an eight and one half-furlong turf test for three-year-olds.
In the Kentucky Utilities Transylvania Stakes (G3T)–the nominal feature–Three Diamond Farm’s Fire At Will, an open-length winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juevnile Turf Stakes (G1T) when last seen on the grass in Central Kentucky, is the 9-5 morning line favorite in a compact field of six entrants. Tyler Gaffalione will be astride the son of Declaration of War for trainer Mike Maker.
Cox, Gaffalione Back To Defend Fall Titles
Jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who has eight mounts on Friday’s program and was the leading rider at Keeneland in October with 24 wins, returns to Lexington, Ky. to try and parlay last fall’s success into a Spring Meet title. Trainer Brad Cox, who has a pair entrants on opening day, annexed the training title in October 2020 at Keeneland, saddling 15 winners.
Post time for the first of 10 races at Keeneland on Friday, April 2 is 1:05 P.M. (Eastern). Additionally, there is a $200,000 guaranteed pool in the late Pick 4 (Races 7-10, 4:24 P.M. (Eastern) post time) presented by Television Games Network (TVG).
Racing will be conducted at Keeneland this April with limited spectators, in accordance with guidelines set forth by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the federal government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
