Night Racing Kicks Off Derby Week 2021
Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. jump starts its 2021 Spring Meeting and Kentucky Derby week on Saturday, April 24 with a 10-race evening program featuring a first race post of 6:00 P.M. (Eastern).
The featured ninth race on the card is the $150,000 William Walker Stakes for three-year-olds sprinting five and one half-furlongs on the Matt Winn Turf Course.
Klein Racing’s Field Day, who has never been off the board on the grass, is the tepid 4-1 morning line choice in a full field of 11.
Jockey Tyler Gaffalione has the call on the bay son of Broken Vow for trainer Brad Cox.
Gaffalione, Maker Back To Defend Fall Titles
Jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who was the leading rider at Churchill Downs last fall with 41 wins, and Mike Maker, who was the top trainer with 21 victories, will be back to defend their respective titles in Derby City in 2021.
Gaffalione is named on six horses on opening night under the Twin Spires, while Maker has five entrants on the program.
Finally, Churchill Downs and The Fund for the Arts are again partnering to kick off the spectacle of Derby Week in 2021 and to celebrate Louisville’s extraordinary arts community. In addtion to live Thoroughbred racing action, a variety of musicians, dancers, live performances, and visual artists will be on display on Saturday night under the famed Twin Spires.
