Three Stakes On New Year’s Eve In South Florida

An eight-race card featuting three turf stakes races is on tap at Gulfstream Park on Friday, December 31, the final program of 2021 at the historic Hallandale Beach, Fla. racetrack.

The stakes action begins in the first race on the New Year’s Eve program with the $100,000 Janus Stakes for three-year-olds and upward sprinting five-furlongs on the turf, continues in the fifth race with the $100,000 Via Borghese Stakes for fillies and mares three-years-old and upward slated for a mile and three-eighths journey on the grass, and concludes in the eigth race nightcap with the $100,000 Abundantia Stakes for fillies and mares three-years-old and upward going 5-panels on the turf.

In the Janus Stakes, William A. Branch’s Carotari, a three-time winner on turf at Gulfstream Park, is the definitive 7-5 morning line favorite in a field that attracted eight entrants. Julien Leparoux will be astride the five-year-old bay son of Artie Schiller for trainer Brian Lynch.

In the Via Borghese Stakes, Jordan V. Wycoff’s Candy Flower, third in the Long Island Handicap (G3T) at Belmont Park on November 7 in her last start, is the 5-2 morning line choice in a field that attracted nine entrants. Jockey Emisael Jaramillo has the call on the four-year-old bay daughter of Twirling Candy for trainer Mike Maker.

Finally, in the Abundantia Stakes, David Melin, Leon Ellman, and Laurie Plesa’s Miss Auramet, an open-length winner in her last start at Gulfstream Park on December 5, is the 2-1 morning line favorite in a full field of 11. Luis Saez will be astride the five-year-old chestnut daughter of Uncaptured for trainer Eddie Plesa.
