Kentucky Derby week 2022 continues at Churchill Downs on Thursday, May 5–colloquially known as Thurby–with an 11-program on the tap at the venerable Louisville, KY racetrack.

The card is highlighted by three stakes races–the $160,000 Opening Verse Stakes for four-year-olds and upward slated for a flat mile trip on the Matt Winn Turf Course, the $200,000 Kentucky Juvenile Stakes for two-year-olds sprinting five-furlongs on the main track, and the $200,000 Unbridled Sidney Stakes for fillies and mares four-years-old and upward sprinting five and one half-furlongs on the grass.

In the Opening Verse Stakes, Hooties Racing, LLC and WSS Racing, LLC’s Mr Dumas, a three-time winner on turf under the Twin Spires, is the tepid 4-1 morning line favorite in a field that attracted 10 entrants. Jockey Reylu Gutierrez has the call on the six-year-old bay son of Majesticperfection for trainer John Ortiz.

Maxis Stables’ Simply Super, who broke his maiden on debut at Keeneland on April 20, is the 7-2 morning line choice in the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes, which attracted a full field of 12. Tyler Gaffalione will be astride the son of Super Saver for trainer Mike Maker.

Finally, in the Unbridled Sidney Stakes, Perry Harrison’s Change of Control, a game second in the 2021 edition of this 5.5-furlong turf spint, is the 3-1 morning line favorite in a field that attracted nine entrants. Jockey Colby Hernandez has the call on the six-year-old bay daughter of Fed Biz for trainer Michelle Lovell.
