Pair Of Overnight Stakes On Sunday’s Card

10 races are on tap at Churchill Downs on Sunday, July 3, the penultimate day of the 2022 Spring Meet in Louisville, KY.
The card features a pair of overnight stakes races–the $160,000 Anchorage Stakes, a one-mile dirt contest for fillies and mares four-years-old and upward and the $160,000 Maxfield Stakes for three-year-olds slated for a seven-furlong trip on the main track.
In the Anchorage Stakes, Shortleaf Stable, Inc.’s The Mary Rose, third in her most recent start under the Twin Spires on June 12, is the 9-5 morning line choice in a compact field of five. Tyler Gaffalione will be astride the five-year-old bay daughter of Macho Uno for trainer John Ortiz.
In the Maxfield Stakes, Winchell Thoroughbreds, LLC’s Gunite, second in his three-year-old debut at Churchill Downs on June 3, is the definitive even-money morning line favorite in a field that attracted six entrants. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione has the call on the son of Gun Runner for Hall-of-Fame trainer Steve Asmussen.
