Stakes Smorgasbord On Saturday’s Card
11-races are on tap at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY on Saturday, September 17, as a weekend of live Thoroughbred racing action continues in Derby City.
The card, which features five stakes races worth over $1.5 million–the $300,000 Open Mind Stakes, the $400,000 Locust Grove Stakes (G3), the $300,000 Iroquois Stakes (G3), the $275,000 Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes, and the $300,000 Pocahontas Stakes (G3).
The Locust Grove Stakes (G3), the program’s centerpiece, is an 8.5-furlong dirt test for fillies and mares three-years-old and upward. Phoenix Thoroughbred III, Ltd.’s Crazy Beautiful, fourth in the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) at Saratoga in her last start on August 27, is the 9-5 morning line favorite in a compact field of six. Jockey Julien Leparoux has the call on the four-year-old gray daughter of Liam’s Map for trainer Kenny McPeek.
