Fall Stars Weekend–a smorgasbord of 11 stakes worth $5.45 million including nine “Win and You’re In” events that are part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series–kicks off Keeneland Race Course’s 17-day fall meet on Friday, October 7. The iconic Lexington, KY racetrack will host the Breeders’ Cup World Championships for the third time on November 4-5.

Friday’s 10-race card is highlighted by three graded stakes–the $350,000 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes (G2) for three-year-olds and upward sprinting six-furlongs on the main track, the $350,000 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G2T) for two-year-old fillies slated for an 8.5-furlong trip on the Haggin Turf Course, and the $500,000 Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1), an eight and one half-furlong dirt test for two-year-old fillies.

Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher’s Special Reserve, a bay son of Midshipman, is the 2-1 morning line favorite to defend his 2021 title in the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes (G2), which attracted a field of eight entrants. Tyler Gaffalione will be astride the six-year-old bay gelding for trainer Mike Maker.

In the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G2T), which attracted a full field of 12 in addition to four also eligible entrants, Augustin Stable’s Delight, who broke her maiden at Delaware Park on August 27, and Klaravich Stables, Inc.’s Tax Implications (GB), first on the also eligible list, are tepid 4-1 co-favorites on the morning line. Jockey Luis Saez has the call on Delight for trainer Jonathan Thomas, while Irad Ortiz, Jr. is named on Tax Implications (GB) for trainer Chad Brown.

Finally, in the Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1), Lucky Seven Stable’s Fun and Feisty, who annexed the Pocahontas Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs in her last start on September 17, is the 7-2 morning line choice in a full field of 14. Jockey Julien Leparoux will be astride the bay daughter of Midshipman for trainer Kenny McPeek.

Cox, Gaffalione Back To Defend Meet Titles

Jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who was the leading rider at Keeneland last October with 29 wins, will be back to defend his title in 2022 and is named on eight horses on Friday’s program. Trainer Brad Cox, who has five entrants on opening day, annexed the training title last October in Central Kentucky with 14 winners.

Post time for the first of 10 races on Friday, October 7 is 1:00 P.M. (Eastern).
