2022 Claiming Crown Arrives In Derby City

An 11-race program highlighted by the 2022 Claiming Crown–an eight-race conglomeration of starter allowance stakes worth over $1 million in purse money that serves as an annual tribute to the blue collar horses that are the backbone of the Thoroughbred racing industry–is on the docket for the first time at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY on Saturday, November 12.
The Claiming Crown series begins in the fourth race and continues, in order, through the eleventh race nightcap with the $150,000 Tom Metzen Memorial, the $150,000 Glass Slipper, the $100,000 Iron Horse Kent Stirling Memorial, the $150,000 Tiara, the $100,000 Ready’s Rocket Express, the $125,000 Rapid Transit, the $175,000 Jewel, and the $150,000 Emerald.
Jack Wagon Stables, LLC’s Intrepid Heart, who has finished second in his past five starts, is the 5-2 morning line favoriote for the Claiming Crown Jewel, the series’ signature event. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione has the call on the six-year-old gray son of Tapit for trainer Joe Sharp.
